Historically, Pushkar always had great
strategic importance and was sacked by Mahumud
of Ghazni on one of his periodic forays
from Afghanistan. Later it became a favorite
residence of the great Mughals. The city
was subsequently taken by the Scindias and,
in 1818, was handed over to the British.
There on, it became one of the few places
in Rajasthan to be controlled directly by
British rather than being part of a princely
state.
Pushkar is merely 11 km from Ajmer and
is significant for the famous fair held
normally in the month of October/November.
Pushkar is the abode of Lord Brahma, lying
to its west with a temple and a picturesque
lake. The Pushkar Lake is a sacred spot
for Hindus. During the month of Kartik (Oct./Nov.),
devotes throng in large numbers here to
take a dip in the sacred lake. Pushkar is
a relatively small town and easy enough
to get around on foot as there are no auto-rickshaws
in the town center.

Pushkar Ghat: Numerous ghats run
down the lake and the pilgrims are bathing
in the lake's Holy waters.
Pushkar Temples: Pushkar has the
Famous Brahma Temple, which holds utmost
importance to the pilgrims, as it is the
only temple in India dedicated to Lord Brahma.
Pushkar Fair: Every year thousands
of devotees throng the lake around the full
moon day of Kartik Purnima in October-November
to take a holy dip in the lake. Huge and
colorful cattle and camel fair "The
Pushkar Fair", is also held during
this time. Pushkar fair is well known for
it's Camel trading and other attractive
activities.
Dance, music and colorful shops spring
up during the fair. You can taste the mouth-watering
traditional delicacies. Colorfully attired
village folk enhance the fun of the occasion.
A host of cultural event against the backdrop
of this pretty setting is also organized
including attractive puppet shows. Cattle
auction and camel races are also a part
of the festivities.
How to reach Pushkar:
By air: The nearest airport to Pushkar
is Jaipur. Jaipur is well connected to all
the major cities in India by air.
By bus: Pushkar is 11 km from main Ajmer
bus stand. Rajasthan Roadways run very comfortable
deluxe buses from Jaipur. There are buses
from Jaipur to Ajmer in every 15 minutes.
The roads are very good, and it takes around
3 hrs from Jaipur. You can also come by
hire private cars.
By train: The nearest railway station for
Pushkar is Ajmer, which is connected to
all the metro cities of India. There are
daily trains from Delhi in morning (Shatabdhi
Exp).
