Bikaner is the royal fortified city with a timeless appeal. Lying in the north of the desert state of Rajasthan, the city is dotted with many sand dunes. Bikaner retains the medieval splendor that pervades the city's lifestyle. More popularly called the camel country, the city is renowned for the best riding camels in the world.

Camel, the ship of the desert is an inseparable part of life here and helps in most of the daily chores of people. The wells of Bikaner, important sources of water are other attractions of the city. These are built on high pedestals with slender minaret towers on each of the four corners and can be noticed even from a distance. Known as the walled city, Bikaner is famous for its sky touching forts, camel safaris, citadels and the well-known camel festival and is an important trade center.

Binaker's history dates back to 1488 A.D. when a Rathore Prince, Rao Bikaji- a descendant of the founder of Jodhpur (1459 A.D.), Rao Jodhaji, established his kingdom here. Rao Jodhaji had five sons but Rao Bikaji was the most enterprising of them. Bikaji chose a barren wilderness called 'Jangladesh' and transformed it to an impressive city, called Bikaner after the founder' name.

The main attraction of the city is the Lalgarh Palace. Maharaja Ganaga Singh built it in memory of his father. A part of the palace has been turned in to the hotels and the rest portion of it has been turned into a museum called Sadul Museum, which preserves the glory of the city. The Junagarh fort built in 1593 by Raja Raj singh reflects the beautiful artistry and architecture of its time. The various parts of the fort such as Dewan-iI-khas, the Phool Mahal, Hawa Mahal, Badal Mahal and Anup Mahal convey the lavish lifestyle and aristocracy of its rulers.

Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum, the Bhandasar Jain Temple, dedicated to the 23rd Jain tirthankara, the Gajanir Palace, the Shiv Bari Temple and Kalibangan, containing remains of the pre-Harappan and Harappan civilizations are some other places worth visiting.
The city of Bikaner is also famous for its festivals like the Camel festival. Held in the month of January every year, this festival offers the travelers an insight into the culture, tradition and life of the inhabitants of the town. The other famous festivals of the town are Kolayat Festival and Gangaur Festival, dedicated to Goddess Parvati.
