Like the golden mirage, Jaisalmer lies
in the heart of Thar Desert. This amber-hued
city bedazzles gloriously in the early morning,
glows peculiarly during sunset and as the
night descends, the sky looks as if on flames,
till it becomes black.
Bhatti Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, after
whom the city finds its name, founded Jaisalmer
in 1156. On advice of a local hermit Eesaal
he chose the Tricut Hills as his new abode
abandoning his vulnerable old fort at Luderwa
just 16 kilometers northwest.
For years Jaisalmer remained untouched
by the outside influences. The life within
the citadel conjures up images of medieval
majesty visible in its narrow lanes, magnificent
palace, havelis, temples and of course skilled
artisans and ubiquitous camels.
One of the major attractions of Jaisalmer
is the daunting 12th century Jaisalmer Fort.
The beautiful havelis constructed by wealthy
merchants of Jaisalmer are yet another interesting
sights of the desert city. More over, the
sloppy sand dunes, camel safari along the
dunes, and the desert citadel are truly
golden fantasy in Thar Desert.
Sun set at Jaisalmer, making the sky golden
brown is a spectacular sight. The perfect
time to visit the golden city is during
the Desert Festival, held in Jan/Feb every
year, when the city reverberates to the
sound of melodious tunes and rhythms. Folk
dances, exciting competitions and contests,
especially the turban-tying contest, Mr.
Desert contest and camel races enliven the
festivities. Colorful craft bazaars are
set up for the occasion and a sound and
light spectacle is organized with folk artists
performing against the splendid backdrop
of the famous Sam sand dunes on the full
moon night.
