"You need to know a lot to realize how little you know'': -'Anonymous'. This saying rightly fits if one is looking to delve into realization by meditating in the pious and pure place called Haridwar in Uttranchal.
Haridwar is known as the site that has been blessed by the Lords Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Down the ages, Haridwar has purified the mind, the body and the soul of people not only in spiritual or holy terms but also since it has emerged as a major learning center for the arts, science and culture. This place has the ancient Gurukul tradition of teaching.
Haridwar, located in the foothills of the Shivaliks and on the banks of River Ganga, is a pivotal pilgrimage site for the Hindus. When The Ganga gushes through the mountain to cross the threshold of the plains, it comes across Haridwar, the first major town on the plains. Though the Ganges does not lose its torrents totally, yet it becomes very quiet and calm here, unlike the innumerable bustling devotees. The water is clean; more 'spiritually than literal' and said to purify our souls of all its sins, making way for Nirvana. Consequently, people bathe on the numerous ghats built on the river shores, some traveling great distances for this purpose solely.
The distinct places to see in Haridwar are Mansa Devi temple located on top of a hill, called the Bilwa Parvat. And is reached by ropeway trekking proved by many Packaged Tours. The top of the hill gives you an excellent view of Haridwar. Shops surround the temple. Har-Ki-Pauri ghat is one of the most sacred pilgrim places. This ghat is at the precise spot where the Ganges absconds the mountains and enters the plains. There are many hotels, guesthouses and temples on this ghat, which can be booked under special tours.
Haridwar has been a source of Ayurvedic medicines and herbal therapy since ancient times. One of the first towns to be developed on Ganges, Haridwar is nevertheless lush and green with forest cover. A tour to The Rajaji Park being established in the in the vicinity, Haridwar is also a destination for the wildlife and nature admirers.
The city looks enchanting in the evening when the ghats become stunningly ablaze with light and color with thousands of Diyas and marigolds floating in the waters of Ganges.
