67 kilometers from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, lies Tirupati a sacred destination that attracts pilgrims and tourist from all over India.
Set on the Tirumalai Hills Tirupati can be toured during any part of the year. Tirupati is home to the richest Vaishnavite shrine in India - the Lord Ventakateshwara Shrine.
Tirupati is an adaptation of 'Tiru' i.e. 'Sri' and 'Sripati' that means 'Lord Vishnu' thus Tirupati literally translates to 'the shrine of Lord Vishnu'. Lord Ventakeshwara is supposedly the 'god of seven hills'.
Prior to the year 1870, the doors of Tirupati were not open to devotees who were not Hindus.
Be it the Pallavas of Kanchipuram or Pandyas of Madura, local chieftains or kings from different parts of South India, each party was engaged in a constant state of competition regarding donation of wealth to the shrine. As a result today the Lord Venkateshwara Shrine in Tirupati has a dome of unadulterated gold and a treasury brimming with wealth.
Well connected to Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and other parts of Southern India, Tirupati is easily accessible from different parts of India.
Every year in September, Tirupati comes alive with festive rituals, gaiety, religious customs and general gaiety during the Brahmotsavam.
The other destinations located in Tirupati that form a part of the religious and tourist circuit are: Sri Kalahasthi, Chandragiri Fort, Agastya Swami Temple, Sri Vedanarayana Swamy Temple, Kalyana Venkateshwara Temple and the Sri Padmavati Devi Temple.
Also visit the Govindarajaswami Temple and Sri Kapileswaraswami Temple on a Tirupati tour to Andhra Pradesh, India.
